Black mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus)

  • Was thought to be closely related to Choco toucan but is only distantly related. The Chestnut mandibled toucan has a 1.35% difference in mitochrondrical DNA so they are classed as a closer relative.

  • A yelping toucan its call can be heard over a wide area and described  as "Dios te de" (God give you)

  • Has 3 sub species Ramphastos ambiguus abbreviatus, Ramphastos ambiguus ambiguus & Ramphastos swainsonii

  • Major disperser of seeds of some plants e.g. Virola sebifera can take upto 45% of fruits taken by birds from these trees can spend upto 3 hours feeding from one tree full of fruit.

  • Regularly hunted for food by tribal hunters reported to be very tasty. In one village over 2 weeks 57 toucans were caught.
