Preliminary investigation into captive Ramphastids management.

Nearly half of the 41 Ramphastidae species have been bred in captivity however this has not been sustained. Ramphastidae are in particular prone to suffer from haemochromatosis which ultimately leads to death. Toucans also frequently suffer from acute negative bacterial infections arising in the intestinal tract and such episodes prove to be fatal within 24hours. In order to manage these species in captivity more effectively for these problems to be overcome.

A questionairre will be sent out to zoo's, private breeders, owners, and to rescue centres (anywhere that looks after Toucans,Aracaris & Toucanettes) GLOBALLY to gain an insight into how they are being looked after and managed in captivity.

From this information we gain we can then collate and analyse data that comes back and can then start to create some management guidelines for these species.

There are many sections to the questionnaire including housing, diet, plants, aviary sizes, medical notes.
