Chasing Toucans

Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco)

Are 60cm long 16cm of that length is the beak!

Male & females look similiar although slight difference in length and width of beak.

Mainly arboreal (live in trees)

Very noisy voice range from coarse raucous croaks to quiet clicks.

Quite clumsy birds tend to hop with legs & tail straight.

Generally live upto 21 years old in captivity, reach sexual maturity at 2 years old generally stop breeding around 17 years old.

Live in an average group size of 15 out of breeding season. One bird usually takes off and they fly in single file!

2 sub species Ramphastos toco albogularis (Southern Toco) Ramphastos toco toco (Northern Toco).

Is found from the Guyana through Brazil to Northern Argentina the only toucan extending into open country and areas.

The first toucan known to Europeans in 1555.

On ground hops well and can cover 10 - 12m in ca. 70 cm hops.
