Chasing Toucans
My name is Mairee I have been a zoo keeper for the last 21 years working with all sorts of animals ranging from primates, big cats, sealions, penguins to a variety of birds.
Toucans are a particular favourite of mine because they are so bizarre. The more you learn about them the more bizarre they seem! However in captivity they have a wide variety of problems which I am currently investigating some of the problems they have.
I was fortunate enough to go and study them in the wild for 7 weeks back in 2006/7. The project was funded by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. I spent approx over 500 hours studying them in the wild and learning about them. It is my hope to go back as I came back with more questions than when I first went!
